What you need to know about comparing breakdown insurance

There are two pretty safe bets when it comes to breakdowns – they’ll happen at the most inconvenient times and often in the most inconvenient places. That’s when breakdown cover comes into its own. Not only will it give you peace of mind any time you’re on the road, but it could get you back on the road when disaster strikes. And it doesn’t matter what kind of vehicle you drive as there are policies that cover car, van, motorbikes and scooters. You can even add it to your existing insurance in many cases.

There are several types of breakdown cover available, from roadside assistance and recovery to onward travel. If you’re travelling further overseas, you can safeguard yourself throughout Europe with EU cover. And these packages can be bought separately or bundled together according to your needs.

Breakdown Cover
Frequently thought questions

We do appreciate that questions about breakdown cover prices are a little too boring to be asked, but they can be thought.

So we’ve compiled the following simple answers to questions frequently thought, about finding the best quote when comparing breakdown cover.

Does breakdown insurance cover me or my vehicle?

You can choose breakdown insurance that covers you or your family, or vehicle-based insurance that offers cover for up to four cars.

If you opt for breakdown insurance for yourself, you’ll be covered no matter what vehicle you’re in, whether you’re the driver or the passenger. You can extend that cover to include up to four people in the same household. That means all four people will be covered in the event of a breakdown, in any vehicle, whether they’re driving or a passenger.

Vehicle-based insurance can be for a car, van or bike and provides breakdown cover for whoever is driving the vehicle. You can opt for multiple cover, which provides insurance for up to four vehicles registered at the same address, and these can be a mixture of cars, vans and bikes.

What type of breakdown cover is right for me?

There are five levels of breakdown cover, which can be bought separately but are typically bundled together. What’s right for you will depend on your individual circumstances and needs.

Roadside assistance The most basic form of breakdown cover. A recovery vehicle will try to fix your vehicle by the side of the road. If this isn’t possible, you’ll be taken to a nearby garage.

Nationwide recovery Offers the same as roadside assistance, but you get to pick the destination you’re taken to (anywhere in the UK).

Onward travel Includes a means of continuing your journey. Some policies provide a replacement car while yours is at the garage, some offer reimbursement of public transport costs, while others even cover a night’s accommodation and medical assistance.

Home start Covers you if your vehicle breaks down at home or within a quarter mile radius of your house.

EU cover Typically, includes all of the above levels of cover, but also applies when you’re in Europe. You can choose between:
• Single trip cover – provides cover for up to 31 days.
• Multi-trip (annual) cover – provides cover for as many trips that you make in a year, up to 90 days in total.

If you’ve just bought a new car, it’s a good idea to check whether the dealership included breakdown cover in the package. If cover was included, it’s worth checking the level to make sure it offers everything you need.

What happens if I have to use my breakdown cover?

Using your breakdown insurance is simple. Firstly, be prepared – keep a copy of your policy details in your car or downloaded to your phone. Then, if your car breaks down, all you need to do is call your breakdown provider. They’ll take details of where you are and what the problem is, then send out a mechanic.

Depending on the nature of the problem and your level of cover, the mechanic will either fix the issue there or send you and your vehicle to a nearby garage.
