New Child Car Booster Seat Rules

Some additions to children’s car seat regulations are set to be introduced in December this year. They apply to the use of child booster seats and when introduced, will limit the use of backless boosters with younger, smaller children. So if you’ve got little ones sitting in your family car, you might need to read on.

What are the current rules?

Current rules in the UK state that all children travelling in a car must use the correct car seat until they’re either 12 years old or 135 cm tall. A backless booster seat, also known as a booster cushion currently satisfies UK law. Children weighing as little as 15kg, the average weight of a three year old, are able to use them.

What’s changing?

Under the new rules, backless booster seats will no longer be approved for use for children smaller than 125cm or weighing less than 22kg. According to Which?, this is because experts have found that with backless booster seats a small child isn't held securely enough, the adult seat belt doesn’t go round children’s bodies correctly and they don’t protect your child in the event of a side-impact crash.

If you have a backless booster, do you need to buy a new seat?

No, you won’t need to by law, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t.

The new rules will only apply to new products appearing on the market. This means that you’ll notice that backless boosters are no longer sold as approved for use with children under 125 cm or weighing less than 22kg.

If you already have a backless booster you will be able to use the seat without breaking any rules.

While backless booster seats are small, convenient and cost less than their backed counterparts, many experts are concerned at the lack of protection they offer the child in the event of impact. In light of these changes, you might want to reassess your booster seat to make sure your little one’s kept as safe as possible.
