Everything you need to know about comprehensive car insurance

By law, you need to have car insurance once you get behind the wheel of a car in the UK, but with different levels of cover available it can be tricky deciding which is best for you. Comprehensive car insurance offers the most complete cover and it’s not always the most expensive option. Here’s how it works.

Frequently thought questions

What is comprehensive car insurance?

There are three types of cover available to drivers in the UK and comprehensive insurance (or fully comprehensive as it’s sometimes known) offers the highest level of protection.

Third party covers you for any damage you cause to other people and their property.

Third party fire and theft is similar to a third party policy, but it also includes cover for the theft of your vehicle or damage by fire.

Comprehensive includes all the cover of a third party fire and theft policy, but will also protect you as a driver and will pay out for damage to your car.

What does comprehensive car insurance cover?

It depends on the individual policy. Some policies offers extras as standard while others will charge you. A few of the most popular included extras are breakdown coverwindscreen repair or replacement and access to a courtesy car if yours is in for repair. If you’re comparing comprehensive quotes, always check the wording of each policy.

Are fully comprehensive policies expensive?

Although most of us would assume a comprehensive policy is always more expensive than a third party or third party fire and theft policy, it’s not always the case. Sometimes, comprehensive insurance can be the cheapest option.

Take a look at what it costs, on average, for our customers. Based on our recent data, 50% of people had a quote of £691.50*** for a comprehensive policy, while for third party fire and theft it was £986.50***. For a third party policy, though, 50% of people had a quote of £1,742.50***. So, you could get more car insurance cover for less money.

The type of car insurance that’s cheapest for you will depend on your personal information. For example, how old you are and where you live. It will also depend on the make and model of your car, the insurance group it is in, how much your car is worth and how many miles a year you drive.
